Temperate Deciduous Forest

Plants

spruce tree from NASA

The spruce tree is a tree that is able to survive in the harsh winters of temperate forests. They do not loose their leaves in the winter but instead the needles (leaves) have a waxy layer on them which help protect them against the cold by helping save water.

Red fir

Fir trees have a waxy coating just like spruce trees but they also have a deep root system which allows them to survive in high winds and heavy snowfall. Along with this they have flexible branches which again can help them survive in harsher winters that have snow.

Oaks have deep root systems which allow them to get some water even when there is temporary drought. They also can adapt depending on their climate to hold in water for when it would be hard to get like during winter.
